Dry Eye and Blepharitis Treatment

Here at Eyes on Broadway we are pleased to offer the first clinician treatment for Blepharitis, BlephEx, which is a quick, safe, and painless procedure that can be performed in-practice by Karmelo.

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is an inflammation of your eyelids. It can make the eyelids red and eyelashes crusty leaving your eyes feeling irritated or itchy. You may find your eyelids become puffy and you may wake up to find your eyelids stuck together. It is a long-term condition usually affecting both eyes and although you can reduce discomfort by traditional eye-lid hygiene methods, you may need to persist at this for several months.

Common symptoms of Blepharitis.

  • Itching or scratchy eyes

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Excessive tearing

  • Crusting

  • Redness/inflammation

  • The build-up of bio-matter around the eyelashes

  • Dry eyes

  • Eye rubbing

What is a BlephEx Treatment?

With the BlephEx cleaning device, scurf and bacterial debris around the eyelids and eyelashes, which are the main causes of inflammatory lid disease (blepharitis) are removed. As part of the treatment, a heated eye-mask is applied over closed eyes to activate the oil glands to improve the natural moisture level of the eyes.

BlephEx will reduce or alleviate these chronic and debilitating symptoms. The treatment is typically repeated at regular intervals depending on the severity of the disease. By eliminating the inflammatory cause of blepharitis, the overall health of the eyelid is improved. Patients can then begin to produce more of their own tears and enjoy a reduction in the chronic and irritating symptoms associated with blepharitis and associated dry eye disease.

BlephEx can also be used prior to eye surgery such as cataract removal as a pre-cautionary treatment to clean the lids of debris (which can harbour bacteria) and may help reduce the risk of infection following the surgery.

How does BlephEx Work and what should I expect?

The revolutionary BlephEx equipment consists of a medical grade disposable micro-sponge soaked in a specialist gentle antibacterial foam, which is spun precisely and carefully along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.

A 40 minute appointment is required on the first treatment but the procedure itself only takes approximately 20 minutes and is well tolerated. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. After the procedure, you are given a complimentary maintenance package that includes

  • preservative free lubricating eye drops

  • eyelid cleansing wipes

  • omega 3 supplements (if suitable)

  • Instructions on how to maintain clean eyelids with regular nightly lid hygiene.

The procedure is typically repeated at 4-6 month intervals.
