MiSight Contact Lenses for Children – Myopia (Short sightedness) Control

The prevalence of myopia is projected to increase from approximately two billion people worldwide in 2010 to almost five billion people in 2050, bringing with it near- and long-term health challenges. Not only does it create blurred vision, but also increases the likelihood of conditions later in life such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy if not addressed.

While glasses and contact lenses can correct the condition, until now, they have been unable to effectively slow its rate of progression.

What is so special about MiSight contact lenses?

MiSight daily disposable contact lenses not only optically correct existing myopia, giving clear vision, but MiSight lenses have also been proven to slow the progression of myopia in most children. This is the latest in holistic approaches to minimising the progression of myopia in children and therefore reducing the risk of associated complications in adulthood.

At what age can children be fitted with MiSight?

These contact lenses are routinely fitted in children as young as six years old. If your child is diagnosed with myopia pre-teenage it would be in their best interest to begin the MiSight myopia control programme sooner rather than later.

What does the process involve?

Your child will have a full 'no-obligation' contact lens consultation and fitting to obtain suitability. Once confirmed, our experienced Optometrist will outline a wearing schedule, review interval and discuss the realistic expectations.

You can be reassured that we will only prescribe and dispense contact lenses once we have taught your child how to safely apply and remove the lenses and we are satisfied that they can wear and handle lenses independently.

The all important 'Do's and Dont's' of contact lens wear will be covered and provided in writing for your reference.

Key points:

  • Reduces the chance of developing high levels of myopia (-6.00D or more) which may lower the incidence of eye diseases associated with short-sightedness such as retinal detachment and glaucoma

  • May improve the self-esteem of children and teenagers in terms of their ability to participate in sporting activities and their social acceptance

  • Daily disposable lenses mean there’s no cleaning, disinfection or worrying about lost lenses
